#GIA60 Campaign - (III) Case Study - WIC Claim (Scenario 1)
Mr Abd Karim Bin Ali, a 59-year-old technician, had faithfully served Alliance Instrumentation Pte Ltd for eight years. On 17 May 2022, he was assigned to carry out annual instrument servicing onboard an oil tanker anchored off Changi. After completing their work late in the evening, he and his colleagues began disembarking via the gangway onto a service boat.
During this process, Mr Abd Karim tragically fell into the sea. Despite immediate rescue efforts by his team, the boatman, and nearby crew members, strong currents swept him away. Search operations by the authorities continued through the night, but he could not be found. Days later, his body was discovered off Batam Island and brought back to Singapore.
The incident was promptly reported, and investigations followed. While no compensation can replace the loss of a loved one, support for the family became the priority.
Under the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA), III stepped in to ensure that the deceased worker’s family received rightful compensation in a timely manner. The claim was handled with care and diligence, providing financial relief during a period of immense grief.
This case reflects III’s commitment to standing by workers and their families—delivering not just coverage, but meaningful support when it matters most.
